Complete automation delivery for a biogas plant in Eastern Jutland
A large-scale biogas plant in Eastern Jutland has been modernised and expanded as part of an extensive upgrade programme. The plant, originally established in the 1990s, has increased its capacity and strengthened its ability to convert waste and residues from agriculture, households and the food industry into renewable gas.
The plant processes various types of biomass and organic residues, which are converted into biogas/biomethane and digestate, allowing nutrients to be recycled back into agriculture.
Nordic SRO has participated in several phases of the project – from engineering, tendering and procurement to programming, testing and commissioning. The scope has included electrical engineering, tendering and procurement of electrical installations, control panels, high-voltage supply, transformer systems, switchgear, HV/LV distribution, panel systems, cable routes and technical installations.
The project has been carried out using Siemens S7-1500 PLC and IGSS SCADA. Nordic SRO has developed standard blocks for both PLC and SCADA as well as a complete PLC program for biomass feeding. The scope also includes standard programming for Vogelsang Premix, biomass feeding for hygienisation and integration of process equipment and third-party systems into the overall control system.
As part of the project, Nordic SRO has also participated in the design and implementation of the plant's IT/OT network with multiple VLANs, segmentation and focus on secure communication between PLC, SCADA and other process equipment. The network structure has been designed with focus on robust operation, cybersecurity and NIS2-relevant principles.
Testing and commissioning have been key parts of the delivery. Nordic SRO has participated in FAT, SAT, onsite cold testing, verification of functions and interfaces, as well as commissioning in close cooperation with operations staff, suppliers and other project stakeholders. Nordic SRO has also contributed to ATEX classifications, documentation, network diagrams and technical handover.
The project has stretched over more than three years and is an example of a comprehensive automation delivery for a technically complex biogas plant, where operational reliability, standardisation, cybersecurity and SCADA overview have been central elements.
